Maui Veterans Highway reopened shortly before 5 p.m. Monday as the Maui Fire Department worked to put out a roughly 35-acre brush fire along the road.

The fire was reported at 1:58 p.m. and had charred about 35 acres as of 3 p.m., Maui County posted on its Facebook page. No evacuations have been ordered, and fire officials said at 3 p.m. that the blaze was not advancing.

The Maui Police Department closed Maui Veterans Highway from North Kihei Road to Hansen Road shortly after 2:30 p.m., and the Maui Emergency Management Agency sent out alerts on the brush fire and traffic closure around 2:40 p.m.

Multiple fire crews and the department’s Air One helicopter responded to the blaze, which is being fed by winds reported at 20 to 25 mph, the county said.

Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui and Molokai are under a wind advisory through 6 a.m. Tuesday, with easterly trade winds of 15 to 30 mph and localized gusts over 50 mph in the forecast, the National Weather Service said. Winds are expected to shift to the northeast tonight and become especially gusty as a cold front moves through the island chain.
