Leaders in Learning: ASM Materials Camp for local teachers

BOISE, ID (CBS2) — Boise State's Micron School of Science and Technology hosted a camp for local teachers and educators focusing on teaching materials science.

These teachers are getting new hands-on lessons and concepts about the study of material structures and properties to take back to their classrooms come Fall.

A first of its kind here in Idaho.

The program is based on past experiences in the areas of curriculum development, teacher training and student programs in Materials Science developed at the University of Washington and Edmonds Community College and supported by the National Science Foundations Advanced Technology Education program.

These programs have demonstrated that Materials Science is an excellent tool to bring together academic and vocational instructors in a common goal of exciting students about science, technology and engineering.

One of the may lessons, using ceramic heat as a way to display chemical reactions.

"We are taking our ceramics out of the kiln and we used a series of oxidized paints to add vibrancy, so we are seeing the magic of a chemical reaction," explains Holly Hardie, a middle school teacher at Gem Prep Academy in Meridian.

"Today at camp we are converting some of the oxides back into metals too!" exclaims Mike Hurley, Professor of Material Science Engineering at Boise State University.

He says the camps teacher networking is a great tool for lesson support and integration too.

Camp organizers hope to expand the camp next year.
